About the Artist
These earrings are part of our Aboriginal Shared Dreaming collection, featuring the licensed artwork of Tess Napaljarri Ross, a Warlpiri artist born near Yuendumu who paints with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. Raised by her stepfather Larry Jungarrayi Spencer, one of the artists who painted the famous Yuendumu Doors, Tess learned the patterns and Dreaming stories of Yarripilangu from a young age and has dedicated her life to keeping them alive.
The Story Behind the Art
The Wardapi Jukurrpa (Goanna Dreaming) comes from Yarripilangku, south-west of Yuendumu. It tells of a group of Warlpiri women sitting together when a man of the Japangardi skin group, Wamaru, came and took a woman of the wrong skin up the hill. The earth transformed, turning to ochre, and he turned himself and all the women into wardapi (goannas). The ochre remains on the hilltop to this day, used for love magic and ceremony. In paintings of this Dreaming, concentric circles represent the women and the goanna holes, while W-shapes trace the tracks left behind.
