About the Artist

This necklace pendant is part of our Aboriginal Shared Dreaming collection, featuring the licensed artwork of Steven Jupurrurla Nelson, a Warlpiri artist born in Alice Springs in 1978 who has been a lifelong resident of Yuendumu. Steven began painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in 2014 and is known for his striking use of colour and abstract forms in depicting his ancestral Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-tail Possum Dreaming).

The Story Behind the Art

The Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-tail Possum Dreaming) travels across Warlpiri country from Mawurrji, a big hill west of Yuendumu. A group of possum ancestors lived there, venturing out each night in search of food. A Nampijinpa woman gave her daughters in marriage to a Jupurrurla possum man, then changed her mind and fled. He tracked them down and killed them with a stone axe. Their bodies became the rocks at Mawurrji that remain to this day. Steven paints this Dreaming with bold colour and abstract form, making it distinctly his own.
