About the Artist

These earrings are part of our Aboriginal Shared Dreaming collection, featuring the licensed artwork of Liddy Napanangka Walker, a Warlpiri artist who paints with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in Yuendumu. Her artwork draws from the rich botanical and ceremonial knowledge of her country, rendered in warm ochre tones that reflect the colours of the Central Australian landscape.

The Story Behind the Art

The Wakirlpirri Jukurrpa (Dogwood Tree Dreaming) celebrates one of the most useful trees of Warlpiri country, growing along creek beds and near mulga trees. The seeds can be eaten raw or cooked, and yield a sweet drink called yinjirrpi. The wood is used for making karli (boomerangs) and dancing boards for ceremony, and it burns so fiercely that rain cannot extinguish it. This Dreaming travels from Jarrarda-Jarrayi through to Puturlu and Mount Theo, west of Yuendumu.
