About the Artist

These earrings are part of our Aboriginal Shared Dreaming collection, featuring the licensed artwork of Joy Nangala Brown, a Warlpiri artist from Yuendumu who paints with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. Joy paints her father's and grandfather's Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings passed to her through generations of her family and their deep connection to the land of Central Australia.

The Story Behind the Art

The Yumari Dreaming originates from a collection of rocks west of Kintore in the Gibson Desert, a site of forbidden love between a Japaljarri man and a Nangala woman. The couple would meet in secret at these rocks, and the story was passed down to Joy through a Pintupi man. In paintings of this Dreaming, concentric circles represent the rock holes of Yumari, carrying the memory of this ancient and tender story through the landscape.
